Dosing & Concentration Guide

CBD Ingestible Products - Capsules and Tinctures

People generally tolerate CBD well, according to the World Health Organization and many other sources.  Because CBD doesn't cause a "high", it does not have the same potential abuse as other cannabis.

Various oral dosages of CBD ranging from 100 to 800mg per day is relatively safe.  There's no one universal dosage of CBD that everyone should take.  Different people respond to different dosages of CBD depending upon a range of factors:

  • Your bodyweight
  • The condition you're treating
  • Your sex
  • Your individual body chemistry and metabolism
  • The concentration of CBD in each capsule, drop, or edible

You should generally start with a low dosage and go slow with increasing your dose.  There also may be variations between products.  When considering dosage, keep in mind that if you have serious medical conditions, such as seizures, get advice from your physician first.  Always choose a company that sells CBD in packaging with transparent mg of CBD and displayed milligrams of CBD per serving.

If you're buying CBD oil, make sure it is Full Spectrum CBD oil, as it is more effective than other types of CBD oils.  Full Spectrum has less than 0.3% THC in it, but enough to establish an "Entourage Effect" where cannabinoids work synergistically to benefit each other and become more effective.  Full Spectrum also has other important phytochemicals such as terpenes and flavonoids that provide more health benefits than just CBD alone.

There are a lot of CBD products out there with different concentrations. The minimum concentration of a CBD Capsule is 10mg/serving, and CBD oil tincture or drops should be no less than 5% or 1500mg in 1oz or you're not likely to get the health benefits.

The optimal dose of CBD is different for everybody, so it's best to start with a low dose when using CBD for the first time and increase gradually every few days.  The most effective daily dosage range for oral CBD products is 40 - 100 mg per dose or per day.  Some people take one dose per day, while others take two to three doses in a single day with a meal.  Taking CBD with a meal with some fats allow for better absorption into the fatty tissues where CBD can be stored.

It might be wise to keep track of how much CBD you're taking and whether your symptoms are getting better.  Patience is key - it can take a few days to a few weeks before you can feel the benefits with capsules. Take CBD capsules daily and at the same time each day, and boost the benefits with tinctures as needed,  Capsules last longer as it gets stored in the fat cells, while tinctures are very bioavailable if taken sublingually, lasting about 4-6 hours as it enters the capillaries and gets released quickly.

CBD isn't regulated by the FDA, so it's up to you to make sure that you're using only high-quality products.  Look for organic and third-party tested, approved by the state (Division of Food Safety), or CDPHE in Colorado.

How to Calculate Dosage:

Some products, such as CBD gummies, capsules, or pills, tell you how much is in a single serving. For example, the packaging on a bottle of CBD capsules might indicate that there are 5 mg of CBD per capsule.

If you’re using CBD oil, it’ll likely come in a dropper bottle. The packaging might specify how much CBD is in a dropper or 1ml. From there, you can figure out how many drops you need to use.

Sometimes it’s harder to figure out how much CBD is in one drop because the packaging specifies the total amount of CBD in the entire bottle, but not the amount that will be in a single drop.

One drop is about 0.05 milliliters (mL). That is, not a full dropper — just a single drop.

This means that a 10-mL bottle of CBD oil contains 200 drops. And if the packaging for that 10-mL bottle says that the bottle contains 1,000 mg of CBD, each drop will contain about 5 mg of CBD.

So, to have 20 mg of that type of CBD oil, you should take four drops.

CBD Topicals

When you buy high quality Full Spectrum CBD products, make sure you also calculate potency, especially in topicals.  Consumers generally gravitate towards a larger number for total milligrams of CBD in a volume, not paying attention to the amount of CBD in a milliliter.  Each fluid ounce of a topical product is about 30 milliliters.  For example, 4 oz. = 120ml, 2 oz. = 60ml.

Take the total milligrams of CBD and divide by the volume in milliliters to get your CBD in milligrams per gram, or mg/ml. Compare potency.  Note: A much higher potency in pure CBD (isolate) is required to get an effect similar to a much lower potency Full Spectrum CBD.

Topicals can be applied as needed.  Apply a small amount (approx. a fingertip size) to the areas of pain or skin irritation.  Many topicals contain essential oils and ingredients that can sometimes cause an allergic reaction.  Even natural herbs can have small side effects such as rashes and other skin irritations.
